One analysis of over 28 million small business queries across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode found Yelp earning more AI citations than the next five leading local discovery platforms combined — 3.4 times more than its closest competitor. On Google AI Mode specifically, Yelp captured 72.5% of all citations in that competitive set. On Perplexity, its share was 62.1%, nearly five times the next closest platform. If a business is treating Yelp as a secondary listing behind Google, that priority order may genuinely have it backwards for AI visibility specifically.

Why Yelp Specifically Dominates

The most likely explanation is structural: AI systems increasingly favor sources with deep, verified, ongoing review corpora over platforms with thinner data, and Yelp has built exactly that kind of dataset over two decades. Separate consumer research backs up why this matters to the platforms themselves — a large majority of people using AI tools for local discovery say it's important to see where the AI's information actually comes from, and a review platform with a long, verifiable track record gives an AI system exactly that kind of sourceable confidence.

What This Means for a Los Angeles Business Specifically

Local analysis focused on Los Angeles service businesses has identified a practical benchmark: roughly 25 Google reviews with consistent responses appears to be the realistic threshold for AI citation eligibility in a market as competitive as LA. Given Yelp's outsized citation share found in the broader research, it's reasonable to treat a comparable, actively maintained Yelp presence as equally important here, not an afterthought behind Google. High review velocity — a steady trickle of new reviews over time — has been linked to a meaningful local visibility increase on its own, separate from the total review count.

The Platform Almost Nobody Thinks About: Foursquare

Here's a genuinely surprising finding: Foursquare largely retired its consumer-facing apps years ago, yet it remains a significant backend data source for AI systems — some analysis suggests a majority of ChatGPT's local business results, especially for smaller or niche businesses, pull directly from Foursquare's underlying city guide data, even though almost no consumer has opened the Foursquare app in years. This is worth knowing specifically because it's easy to assume a platform nobody visits anymore doesn't matter — for AI citation purposes, that assumption would be wrong.

What to Actually Do About This

Don't treat citation-building as "list everywhere" — roughly ten authoritative, genuinely relevant citations now outperform fifty scattered, low-quality ones. For a Los Angeles business, that shortlist should include: a complete, actively maintained Google Business Profile, an equally complete and active Yelp profile, and industry-specific directories relevant to your actual category, kept perfectly consistent in name, address, and phone number across every one of them. Treating Yelp with the same seriousness as Google — responding to reviews, keeping information current, encouraging genuine detailed reviews rather than generic praise — is no longer optional given how heavily AI systems appear to lean on it.
