Build a website first, almost always. A website gets found through search with zero friction — no download, no app store, no permission requests — which makes it the right tool for discovery and lead generation. An app requires a customer to give up phone storage and navigate an app store before they've even experienced what you offer, which only makes sense once a business has proven customers care enough to bother.

What a Website Is Actually Good At

A website is discoverable. Someone searching for your service finds you through Google without installing anything, which makes it the foundation for organic traffic, SEO, and lead generation. It works on any device with a browser, requires no update cycle for the visitor, and can be built and launched in weeks rather than months. For consultants, agencies, local businesses, and most B2B companies, a website isn't one option among several — it's the baseline requirement for existing digitally at all.

What an App Is Actually Good At

An app wins on retention and habitual engagement. Push notifications, offline access, and deeper integration with a customer's phone are all things a website genuinely can't replicate as well. But every one of those advantages only matters if a customer already cares enough to install the app in the first place — and getting someone to cross that install barrier is one of the highest-friction moments in digital marketing. An app makes sense when customers interact with your business frequently enough that habitual, front-of-home-screen presence is genuinely valuable to them, not just to you.

The One Question That Actually Decides It

Ask directly: does a customer need to open something related to your business daily or weekly, out of habit, not just occasionally when they need something?

If customers search for your service occasionally, want quick information, or book something a handful of times a year — a website is what you need, full stop. This describes the large majority of local service businesses, professional services, and B2B companies.

If customers would genuinely open something related to your business often — tracking an order, managing a loyalty program, checking a dashboard, using a tool repeatedly — an app starts to make real sense, but usually only once that behavior is already happening on your website or through customer requests, not as a guess about future demand.

The Middle Ground Most Businesses Don't Know About

A Progressive Web App (PWA) offers a genuine middle path: built with standard website technology, a PWA can still be saved to a customer's home screen, send push notifications, and work offline, without going through an app store or paying its fees. For a business that wants some app-like behavior without committing to the cost and complexity of separate iOS and Android development, a PWA is worth exploring before jumping straight to a full native app.

The Sequence That Actually Works

Build a strong, SEO-optimized website first. Use it to prove real demand and repeat engagement. Only then consider an app, once that demand is established rather than assumed. Building an app before a business has proven customers who'd actually use one is one of the most common and expensive mistakes in this space — a native app for both iOS and Android represents a significant multiple of a website's cost, and an app nobody opens after the first week is a poor return on any budget, regardless of how well it's built.

Where to Go From Here

Once you've decided what to build, the next real question is realistic cost — see How Much Should a Business Website Cost in 2026?, or get the complete picture in the full guide: Website Design and Development for Growing Businesses.
