Most businesses have no idea whether AI tools recommend them, because nobody has actually checked. Below are five concrete, checkable signs — not vague warnings, but specific things you can verify today — that indicate a business is currently invisible to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews, regardless of how good the actual work is.
1. You've Never Actually Asked an AI Tool About Your Own Business
This is the simplest test available, and the one almost nobody runs. Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask the exact question a real customer would ask — "who's a good [your service] in [your neighborhood]" — and see whether you show up. Not a search about your company by name; a real, natural question a stranger would type.
If you've never done this, you don't actually know where you stand — you're guessing. Most businesses that finally run this test are surprised, in one direction or the other.
2. Your Website Has No Structured Data
Structured data (schema markup) is code that tells an AI system plainly what your business is, where it operates, and what it offers — without making it infer that from paragraphs of marketing copy. Most small and mid-sized business websites don't have this by default; it has to be deliberately added.
You can check this yourself: right-click your homepage, choose "View Page Source," and search (Ctrl/Cmd+F) for the word "schema" or "application/ld+json." If nothing turns up, an AI system is working significantly harder than it needs to just to understand what your business does — and often gives up rather than guess.
3. Your Business Information Doesn't Match Across the Web
Pull up your website, your Google Business Profile, and two or three directory listings side by side. Does your business name read exactly the same everywhere? Same phone number? Same service list, worded the same way?
Small inconsistencies — a slightly different business name on one listing, a phone number that's out of date on one directory — don't just look sloppy to a human. They make an AI system less confident that all these mentions describe the same, stable business, which directly reduces how willing it is to cite you by name.
4. Your Content Never Directly Answers a Real Question
Look at your own website's service pages. Do they open by answering a specific question a customer would actually ask — "how much does this cost," "how long does this take," "do you serve my area" — or do they open with a paragraph about your mission and values before getting anywhere near an answer?
AI tools favor content that states its point plainly and early. A services page that reads like a brochure rather than an answer gives an AI system very little it can confidently quote or summarize, even if the information is technically in there somewhere.
5. You Have Few or No Third-Party Mentions
This is the one that matters most, and the one most businesses have never addressed at all. Search your own business name and see what comes up beyond your own website: directory listings, press coverage, genuine reviews, social profiles. If the only place your business is described is your own website, an AI system has no independent confirmation that you're a real, established option — it only has your word for it.
A handful of solid directory listings and a few genuine reviews will consistently out-cite a beautifully designed website with nothing else pointing to it.
What to Do If Two or More of These Apply
Fix them in the order they're listed here — it roughly matches how quickly each one can realistically be addressed. Structured data is a one-time technical fix. Consistency across the web is a focused afternoon of checking and correcting. Content restructuring takes longer but is entirely within your control. Third-party mentions take the longest, because they build over time rather than getting fixed in a single sitting — which is exactly why it's worth starting now rather than treating it as a someday project.
