A small handful of platforms now account for the majority of everything AI systems cite. Multiple independent studies through 2026 consistently point to the same small group: Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia, and Quora, together capturing a share of AI citations far larger than traditional business websites and news publishers combined. The exact ranking between Reddit and YouTube shifts depending on which study and which month you look at, but the underlying pattern holds steady across every source: user-generated, community, and video content is where AI systems are increasingly finding their answers — not individual business websites.

The Concentration Is More Extreme Than Traditional Search Ever Was

In traditional Google search, the top 15 most-visited domains capture roughly 20% of organic search share on comparable queries — a genuinely wide, distributed field. Across AI answer engines, that same top-15 concentration climbs to roughly 68%. That's a fundamentally different landscape: a small number of platforms now carry an outsized share of what AI systems actually cite, and your own website, however well-optimized, is competing for citation space against Reddit threads and YouTube videos, not just other business websites.

What This Actually Means for Your Business

This doesn't mean your website doesn't matter — it still does, as the foundation everything else points back to. What it means is that a website alone, with nothing happening anywhere else, is now working against a genuinely uphill structural disadvantage. If your business is never discussed on Reddit, never has a Quora answer referencing it, and has no YouTube presence at all, you're effectively invisible to a large share of where AI systems are actually pulling their answers from — regardless of how well-built your own site is.

Practical Ways to Show Up Where It Actually Counts

None of this requires becoming a full-time content creator across four new platforms. A few realistic starting points:

Answer real questions on Quora and relevant local subreddits, genuinely. If someone in a Los Angeles-focused subreddit or Quora thread asks a question your business could honestly answer well, answering it — without a hard sales pitch — builds exactly the kind of community presence AI systems are now weighting heavily. This has to be genuine; a self-promotional answer gets downvoted and ignored, which helps nobody.

Some YouTube presence beats none. This doesn't need to be a produced content series — a simple FAQ video, a short walkthrough of your process, or a genuine customer testimonial on video is enough to exist in a format AI systems are increasingly citing.

Encourage real customers to mention you where they already talk. If your customers are already active in local Facebook groups, neighborhood forums, or relevant subreddits, a genuine mention from a real person carries more weight in this landscape than anything your business could post about itself.

Don't fake it. All of this research points to authentic, community-rooted content outperforming branded content specifically because it isn't branded content. Attempting to game this with fake accounts or transparent self-promotion tends to be spotted and discounted, both by the communities themselves and increasingly by the AI systems evaluating discussion authenticity.

Where to Go From Here

This is one more piece of the third-party trust signal that matters most for AI citation — see the foundational explanation in How AI Overviews and ChatGPT Decide What to Cite, or get the complete picture in the full guide: AI Optimization for Los Angeles Businesses: A Complete Guide.
