Yes — and the reason isn't redundancy, it's that they win two different customer moments. Local SEO gets a business found by someone actively searching Google or Google Maps; AI visibility gets a business recommended by someone who skips that step entirely and asks an AI tool directly. Both moments exist, often in the same household, sometimes in the same hour.

What Local SEO Actually Covers

Local SEO is the set of practices that get a business to show up when someone searches with local intent — "plumber near me," "best tacos in Silver Lake," a specific neighbourhood plus a service. It's built around a specific, well-established set of signals: a claimed and complete Google Business Profile, consistent name/address/phone information across the web, local citations and directory listings, genuine customer reviews, and location-relevant content on the business's own website.

Google has been refining how it ranks local results for close to two decades. The rules are mature, well-documented, and largely stable — which makes local SEO a known, reliable investment rather than a moving target.

What AI Visibility Covers

AI visibility is what determines whether a business gets mentioned when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews a question instead of typing a search. It rests on a different, newer set of signals: structured data on the website, consistency of information across every source an AI system might draw from, content written to answer questions directly, and — most heavily weighted of all — genuine third-party mentions across the web.

Unlike local SEO, this discipline is still being defined in real time. The platforms themselves are evolving quickly, and the businesses that build a foundation now are working with less competition than they will in even a year.

Where They Actually Overlap

The overlap is real, and it's worth naming so neither discipline gets treated as a totally separate project: a complete, accurate Google Business Profile helps both. Consistent business information across directories helps both. Genuine customer reviews help both. A fast, clear, well-structured website helps both. None of the foundational work is wasted — a business that's done local SEO properly is already most of the way toward AI visibility too.

Where They Diverge

The divergence shows up in what each discipline adds on top of that shared foundation. Local SEO adds location-specific keyword targeting, Google Maps optimization, and review-volume strategy aimed squarely at ranking in a list. AI visibility adds schema markup built for machine readability, content restructured to answer questions in the first sentence rather than build up to it, and a deliberate effort to accumulate the kind of third-party mentions that make an AI system confident enough to cite a business by name.

A business chasing only one of these has genuinely covered half of how people now search — not a small edge case, but a real, growing half.

The Cost of Only Doing One

Imagine two identical dental practices in the same Los Angeles neighbourhood. One has invested in local SEO only: strong Google Business Profile, plenty of reviews, ranks well on Google Maps. The other has invested in AI visibility only: clean schema markup, direct-answer content, solid directory presence, but a thin Google Business Profile and few reviews.

The first practice wins every customer who searches "dentist near me" on Google. The second wins every customer who asks ChatGPT "which dentist near [neighbourhood] is good with kids." Neither practice is doing anything wrong — each is just invisible to exactly the customers the other one is winning. A practice investing in both isn't duplicating effort; it's covering the two most common ways people actually look for a dentist today.

Where to Go From Here

The shared foundation between these two disciplines means the smartest sequencing is rarely "pick one." It's making sure the foundational pieces — Google Business Profile, consistent information, genuine reviews, a well-structured website — are solid first, since they serve both, and then layering the AI-specific additions (schema, direct-answer content, third-party mentions) on top once that base is in place.
