You can track AI search visibility without an enterprise monitoring budget: check your existing Google Search Console and Google Analytics data for signals that are already there, then run a simple, repeatable manual test across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews on a regular schedule. Paid monitoring tools exist and can help once you're ready to invest, but they're not required to get a genuinely useful read on where you stand today.
Check What You Already Have First
Two tools you likely already have installed can tell you more than you'd expect.
Google Search Console includes appearances in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode within its standard Performance report — it doesn't separate them out into their own category, but the impressions are in there. Reviewing your existing queries for ones where AI Overviews are known to appear (broad, informational questions rather than exact brand-name searches) gives a rough read on whether you're showing up.
Google Analytics can catch some AI-driven traffic directly. ChatGPT has been appending source tracking to many of its citation links, which means checking your GA4 traffic-source reports for referrals from chatgpt.com can reveal real visits you didn't know were happening. This traffic is often worth paying attention to — AI-referred traffic has shown meaningfully higher conversion rates than average organic search traffic in early data, likely because someone arriving after an AI tool already vouched for you is further along in their decision than someone browsing a list of links.
The Manual Test: Free, Simple, and Genuinely Useful
This is the single most accessible method available, and it costs nothing but a few minutes on a regular schedule. Pick three to five real questions an actual customer would ask — not your business name, but the kind of question that would lead someone to you: "who's a good [your service] in [your neighborhood]," phrased naturally. Ask each question in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google (checking for an AI Overview), and log what comes back: were you mentioned at all, and if so, were you actually cited as a linked source or just named in passing.
Do this consistently — monthly is a reasonable starting cadence — and keep a simple log (a spreadsheet is plenty) with the date, the question, the platform, and the result. The value isn't in any single check; it's in watching the pattern change over months as you do the underlying AIO work.
Mentions vs. Citations: A Distinction Worth Tracking Separately
A mention is your business being named somewhere in an AI-generated answer. A citation is that answer explicitly attributing a claim to your website with a link. These aren't the same thing, and they signal different things: a lot of mentions with few real citations usually means AI systems recognize your brand exists but aren't yet treating your own website as the authoritative source for information about it — often a sign to strengthen the structured data and direct-answer content on your site itself, even if third-party recognition is already working.
When a Paid Tool Actually Makes Sense
Once manual tracking becomes something you want automated — checking more questions, more platforms, more often than you can reasonably do by hand — dedicated AI visibility tracking tools exist, with entry-level options starting in the range of $20 to $30 a month rather than requiring an enterprise budget. This is worth considering once you have a real cadence of AIO work happening and want to measure it more precisely, not something to reach for before you've validated the manual method is telling you something useful.
Where to Go From Here
Tracking only matters once there's real AIO work happening to measure — see the foundational signals worth building first in How AI Overviews and ChatGPT Decide What to Cite, or get the complete picture in the full guide: AI Optimization for Los Angeles Businesses: A Complete Guide.
