Google's AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users as of Google I/O in May 2026, with queries more than doubling every quarter since launch — and at that same event, Google merged AI Mode directly into its main search flow, making it a default part of the experience rather than an optional tab. The part that matters most for a Los Angeles business: AI Mode surfaces far fewer businesses per search than the traditional three-listing local map pack. Being one of the few names it trusts enough to mention now matters more, not less.

What Actually Changed at Google I/O 2026

Google announced that AI Overviews and AI Mode have merged into one continuous flow: a search now moves from a question, to an AI-generated overview, into a full AI Mode conversation, without a hard boundary between them. This is powered by a newer, faster model and runs globally across desktop and mobile. Google also reported that despite this shift toward generated answers, overall search volume hit an all-time high — people aren't searching less, they're searching differently.

The Concentration Problem: Why This Is Higher-Stakes Than the Old Map Pack

This is the detail most coverage of AI Mode misses. The traditional local map pack shows three businesses upfront, with more just a click away — a reasonably wide net. Research on AI Mode's actual behavior found that AI-generated local results surface only about 32% as many unique businesses as the traditional map pack does for the same kind of search. In practice, that means AI Mode might name one or two businesses instead of three, or sometimes none at all for a given query, depending on how confident it is in what it finds.

For a competitive market like Los Angeles, this is a real shift in the shape of the competition. It's not that more businesses are competing for AI visibility — it's that AI Mode concentrates attention on fewer winners than the search formats businesses are used to competing in.

What AI Mode Actually Weighs Most

According to current local search ranking research, Google Business Profile completeness and activity is the single most heavily weighted factor for local AI visibility — regular posts, current photos, answered Q&A, and accurate service descriptions all give the system structured information it can confidently reference. Review quantity, quality, and recency matter heavily too: a business with a couple hundred recent, strong reviews will be cited over a competitor with a few dozen reviews from years ago. And NAP consistency — your business name, address, and phone number matching exactly across Google, Yelp, industry directories, and your own website — directly affects how confident the system is that it's looking at one real, stable business rather than several uncertain fragments.

The Risk Worth Knowing About

AI Mode doesn't always get things right. It can pull from outdated or mismatched sources and present information with more confidence than it deserves — meaning a customer could get a wrong hour, an outdated service, or an inaccurate detail about your business presented as fact, without you ever knowing it happened. This isn't a reason to avoid AI visibility work — it's a reason to make sure the accurate version of your information is the most consistent, complete, and frequently updated version available, so it's what the system finds first.

What to Actually Do About This

None of this requires reinventing your strategy — it sharpens the priority order of work already worth doing:

  • Keep your Google Business Profile genuinely active, not just claimed — regular posts, current photos, answered questions.

  • Actively build review volume and recency, not just a high average from years ago.

  • Audit your NAP consistency across every platform your business appears on — Google, Yelp, industry-specific directories, your own website.

  • Document real customer FAQs in natural, conversational language — the way AI Mode actually processes questions, not keyword fragments. For the full, practical checklist, see How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile for AI Search.

Where to Go From Here

This concentration effect is exactly why the foundational AIO work matters more now than it did even a year ago — see the complete picture in AI Optimization for Los Angeles Businesses: A Complete Guide.
