Core Web Vitals — Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, and Cumulative Layout Shift — remain a confirmed, documented part of Google's traditional ranking system, with clear thresholds: LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds, CLS under 0.1. Whether Core Web Vitals AI search citations are directly linked is a different, more contested question. Several sources claim strong, specific correlations. The largest rigorous independent study on this exact question found something notably weaker, and Google's own AI features documentation doesn't mention Core Web Vitals as a requirement at all.

The Three Metrics and Their Thresholds

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how long the biggest visible element on a page — usually a hero image or main heading — takes to fully render. Good is under 2.5 seconds.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures how quickly a page responds to a user's interaction, evaluating every click and keystroke rather than just the first one. Good is under 200 milliseconds.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures visual stability — whether elements jump around as a page loads. Good is under 0.1.

Google evaluates all three using real visitor data from the Chrome User Experience Report, at the 75th percentile — meaning three-quarters of a page's actual visits need to hit "good" for the page to pass.

How Core Web Vitals Actually Work for Traditional Ranking

For regular Google search, Core Web Vitals function less like a hard requirement and more like a tie-breaker. Strong content with mediocre Core Web Vitals can still rank well. But on a genuinely competitive search where several pages offer comparable content quality, the faster, more stable page tends to win that tie. Treating speed as the whole strategy is a mistake; treating it as irrelevant is a different mistake.

The Honest Picture on AI Citations Specifically

This is where the certainty drops off. The largest empirical study addressing this exact question, published in January 2026, analyzed over 107,000 pages appearing in Google AI Overviews and found only weak correlations between Core Web Vitals and AI visibility. Its conclusion was direct: AI systems appear to choose sources primarily based on content clarity and how well it matches what's actually being asked, not loading speed. Google's own documentation on AI search features states there are no additional technical requirements to appear in AI Overviews beyond normal search eligibility. Some other sources report much stronger, more specific correlations — but several of those come from vendors and agencies with SEO tools or services to sell, which is worth factoring into how much weight to give the claim.

The Indirect Pathway That Actually Matters

The more defensible connection isn't direct — it's structural. AI systems, including Google's own AI Overviews, draw heavily from the same underlying search index and candidate pool that traditional ranking already filters. A page held back by poor Core Web Vitals is less likely to rank well traditionally in the first place, which means it's less likely to be in the pool an AI system is choosing from at all. Speed doesn't appear to be a direct AI-citation factor on its own evidence — but it still shapes whether a page gets a fair shot at being considered.

What to Actually Do About It

Treat Core Web Vitals as foundational web health, not a dedicated AI-citation tactic. Getting LCP, INP, and CLS into "good" territory helps traditional ranking directly and keeps a page in the candidate pool AI systems draw from — that's reason enough to prioritize it, without needing to oversell a direct AI-citation link the evidence doesn't clearly support yet.
