Two completely free, official tools let anyone see exactly what a competitor is currently running in ads, with no login and no subscription: Meta Ad Library for Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, and Google's Ads Transparency Center for Search, YouTube, Display, Shopping, and Gmail. Both exist because of genuine advertising transparency requirements, not as a marketing gimmick — and most small businesses have never used either one, let alone used them well.

What Each Tool Actually Shows

Meta Ad Library lets you search by page name and see every currently active ad that page is running, including multiple creative variations at once. Google's Ads Transparency Center works by advertiser name or, more usefully, by domain — searching a competitor's actual website domain surfaces ads across every account pointing to that domain, including ones run through an agency under a different account name. A common misconception is that Google's archive only covers the last 30 days; it actually keeps a full year of ad history, searchable directly.

The Genuinely Useful Signal: How Long an Ad Has Been Running

This is the single most actionable thing either tool reveals: an ad that's been running continuously for 30 days or more is very likely profitable. Advertisers pull underperforming ads quickly, since there's no reason to keep paying for something that isn't working. A competitor's long-running ad isn't just an example of their creative — it's real evidence of what's actually converting for them, which makes it genuinely worth studying for messaging angles, offers, and creative approach, not copying outright.

A Trick Worth Knowing: The EU Version Shows More

Due to different regional transparency requirements, viewing Google's Ads Transparency Center or Meta Ad Library with the region set to a European country reveals reach and targeting information that the US version deliberately hides — giving a genuinely useful additional layer of insight into how broadly and to whom an ad is actually being shown, information that isn't available anywhere else for free.

What Neither Tool Can Tell You

Being honest about the real limits here matters: neither tool reveals actual ad spend, specific keyword targeting, bid strategy, or detailed audience settings. What they show is creative and basic metadata — the ad itself, roughly how long it's run, and which platform it's on. For genuine keyword-level competitive research, that requires a different tool entirely, like Google's own Keyword Planner or a paid competitive intelligence platform. These free tools answer "what are they saying and showing," not "exactly how they're targeting it."

Where to Go From Here
