A featured snippet quotes a single page verbatim and links back to it — Google's original answer box, in place since 2014, appearing on a relatively small share of searches. An AI Overview is a generated summary synthesized from multiple sources at once, launched in 2024, now appearing across roughly half of US searches. Both aim to answer a question instantly, but they're built on genuinely different mechanisms, and understanding the difference changes how content should actually be structured.
Featured Snippets: One Source, One Winner
A featured snippet pulls one clean passage directly from a single page and displays it, word for word, with a link back to the source. Winning this spot is a competition to be the single best, most precisely-matched answer for one specific question — clean structure, an exact-match answer, and strong on-page SEO are what earn this placement. Only one page wins the spot for any given query.
AI Overviews: Many Sources, Many Possible Winners
An AI Overview doesn't quote one page — it generates original text, synthesized from a number of different sources, often eight or more, weaving together whichever pages best answer different parts of a broader question. This changes the competition entirely: rather than competing to be the single winner, a page is competing to be the best answer to one specific angle of a larger question, alongside several other sources contributing their own angles to the same summary.
The Good News: The Same Content Often Wins Both
Content built to be concise, direct, and well-structured — the kind that wins a featured snippet — tends to also be a strong candidate for AI Overview citation, since both formats reward the same underlying qualities: a clear, extractable answer stated early and precisely. Optimizing specifically for AI Overviews generally means going further than snippet-level optimization — building genuine topical depth and demonstrated authority across a subject, not just precision on one exact phrase — but it rarely means starting from scratch on a separate strategy.
The Real Difference in What Each One Does for a Business
Featured snippets tend to drive more direct traffic, since a single clear source gets full credit and a visible link. AI Overviews function more as a visibility and credibility signal — a business cited within a synthesized answer builds brand presence and trust even when the searcher doesn't click through immediately, since the answer's already been delivered on the page. Neither replaces the other; a business benefits from being positioned to win both, since they're serving genuinely different moments in how a searcher is looking for an answer.
